Watch for Common Tendon Injuries in Your Feet

Feb 23, 2015

It is too bad when foot or ankle problems keep you from enjoying a nice hike in Florida’s outdoors, especially while the weather is still a little cooler. Spruce Creek Park in Port Orange comes to mind, with a boardwalk leading to nature trails that include an observation tower, swampland, and beautiful Rose Bay. Some common tendon injuries could keep you from hiking, but you might still be able to enjoy the beauty from your canoe, as there’s a launch right in the park.

Here are some of the conditions that could keep you out of the big outdoors:

  • Achilles tendinopathy includes tendinitis (inflammation of the tissue) and tendinosis (tiny tears or swelling). This strong cord at the back of your heel connects to your calf muscles and is involved in most of your foot movements. When it is damaged or ruptured, your movements are hampered and painful.
  • Peroneal tendon injuries involve the tendons along your outer ankle that attach to the outer bones of your feet. When injured, pain and inflammation result. They can cause ankle weakness and increase your arch height, too. Make an appointment with us as soon as possible if you suspect they are moving out of position, as this could lead to a rupture.
  • Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction involves the tendons on the inside of your foot that help hold up your arch. When they wear out from overuse, you could begin to develop flat feet with its possible complications.
  • Extensor tendonitis occurs in the tendons that run down the front of your leg and connect to the tops of your toes. Because they lie on the bones on top of your feet, they are subject to damage from tight shoes and excessive stress from running on an incline. Pain will be along the top of your foot and be worse when you are active.
