How to Recognize the Early Signs of Problematic Leg Veins

Jan 22, 2021

A very common misconceptions about varicose veins is that they are simply an embarrassing cosmetic issue.  In reality that couldn’t be further from the truth.  For those that experience visible spider or varicose leg veins this is a warning sign, it’s your body’s way of telling you that something is off.  Noticeable veins in the legs and ankles are not simply a sign of normal aging. They may be an indicator that the veins in the legs cannot properly return blood to the heart. At the very least, many people unknowingly suffer from nonspecific and vague symptoms such as leg cramping, pain, fatigue, throbbing, aching, swelling, itching or a feeling of heaviness. At worst, when left untreated over time they can manifest into more serious health issues such as blood clots, skin issues, or bleeding.   Whether it is the first time you are noticing veins on your legs, or you have been dealing with them for years, it is vital to understand which leg vein symptoms are most commonly linked to some of the most concerning health problems.
  • Severe unexplained dry and itchy skin around your calf and shin or near bulging veins
  • The appearance of bulging veins, especially after prior pregnancies
  • Brownish or blackish discoloration of the shins along with dry, flaky skin
  • Unexplained throbbing or aching sensations in the legs, made worse after standing
  • Constantly feeling the need to elevate your legs or massage your legs after work
  • Heaviness, fatigue, or a feeling of tightness at the end of the day
  • An increased frequency in leg cramps at night or sensation of restless legs
  • Unexplained prickly or burning sensation, or feeling of ‘creepy crawlers’ under the skin
  • Bruising on the upper and lower legs that was not caused by a physical injury

This is just a partial list of the many symptoms from varicose veins.  There are many vein-related symptoms that can serve as strong indicators of leg problems that can be treated. When scheduling an appointment with Upperline Health we will be able to assess your symptoms more in depth and if need be, order an in-house duplex ultrasound that will be used to do a thorough review of your leg veins.  The ultrasound allows the guidance needed for the physician to determine which leg veins will need treatment to help you find relief. Upperline Health has helped patients of varying ages resolve their leg vein concerns.
